The Trap of Self-Introspection
If you find yourself analyzing your self or your patterns, trying to
figure out why you are a certain way, trying to come up with ways of
changing what you see in self, you are stuck in introspection. I have
seen students get buried deep in self-introspection. It becomes
addictive and doesn’t lead to growth. Once the habit of introspection
begins, some people will do it for years, believing that they are
working on self, but in reality making little movement.
Being stuck in self-introspection can be very discouraging. I have seen
people who say in desperation, ‘I have been working on self for years
now and nothing ever changes.’ When I ask them how they are
‘working’ on self, they describe self-introspection, often not
having a clue between the difference between introspection and
self-observation.
Why isn’t self introspection the same as self-observation or stalking
the self? It is because self introspection uses the wrong part of self.
It uses the mind to try to figure out the mind. The mind contains the
sub-conscious and because of this does not function properly. A broken
computer can never figure itself out. It will calculated itself onto
infinity and still remain the same.
Self-observation or stalking the self transcends the mind. True
self-observation is done from the Observer. The Observer exists at a
frequency above the mental body. The Observer does not ‘think’. It
is pure awareness. The Observer does not analyze. It simply watches and
witnesses. The Toltecs have three Masteries. The first Mastery is the
Mastery of Awareness. Part of the Mastery of Awareness is developing
(or connecting up with) the Observer aspect of Self.
Much can be said about living from the Observer. However that is beyond
the scope of this dissertation. What is important for now is to be
certain you are not confusing self-introspection with self-observation.
Self-introspection is another of the ego’s trip to make you believe
you are working on self. Self-Observation belongs to the Self. As you
observe or stalk self, be careful not to analyze, or try to change what
you see. It is not necessary to ‘do’ anything when stalking self.
The Observer vibrates at a high frequency that will create catharsis
and growth. Let it.

I fully acknowledge what you say about confusing self introspection with self observation.
What I find hard is to observe self dispassionately without wanting making changes to what I see. It seems more to me that that observing without changing might keep you in a pattern forever.
